Performing Surya Namaskar Today there are any number of versions of Surya Namaskars. The “classic” or standardized form practiced by the Maharaja of Aundh consists of 12 basic movements or yogasanas performed in a fluid succession. Based on ancient Brahmanic Sun rituals performed for health, longevity and success in all areas of human endeavor, the exercise spread rapidly in the early twentieth century after the Raja modified and popularized it in a series of English publications that immediately gained international attention. |
12 positions, each one expresses a “stance” in relation to the sun and the earth -- to the “beyond” and to the “here and now” -- in space and in time.
